What we do

Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia. Temperate Climate. Good rainfall. Total population 5000

We’re part of an intentional community building self-sufficiency and resilience in the face of collapsing systems. We’re involved in a reciprocal local economy based on contribution, connection and respect, trading produce, skills, expertise, machinery, (and care), with the surrounding neighbouring properties.

We own 450 acres (95% heritage native bushland) and have a strong conservation ethic, protecting the biodiversity here. There are no dogs or hunting on the property. We often welcome scientists onto the land for surveys of different species thought to be extinct.

We’ve been off-grid for 40+ years and have built various dwellings of mud-brick, rammed earth and insulated tin and timber, powered by solar and wind. We have fenced gardens and water security.

We’re a quiet, harmonious community comfortable with the isolation and solitude the island offers, but we work together well on projects that bring about mutual benefit. The island community generally is very close knit, demonstrated during the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020, and the re-building that followed.

We’re involved in a local Harvest Exchange. Although our gardens produce much food, they are nowhere near their full potential. This is our immediate focus and something we want to see realised.

We need more people that can bring a range of skills and expertise, who might be willing learners and contributors. We have space to share for 4-8 more residents to join the four already here, who might be willing to carry the vision of stewardship we hold forward, and who eventually could make/build a home here that offers security and safety.

Right now, we’re looking for anyone who might like to make contact and, if it’s a good fit, consider visiting for a week and offering 10-20 hours of help in the garden in exchange for accommodation. Partial subsidy for ferry travel from Cape Jervois is negotiable.
