At SBSHC, we’re all about community, affordability, and sustainability. We offer students a unique living experience based on democratic control, community ownership, and social connection in safe, budget-friendly housing close to the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Diverse and Inclusive Community
Our co-ops bring together students from all backgrounds, cultures, and countries, creating a rich, diverse environment that promotes learning and mutual respect. With an open membership policy, we welcome all currently enrolled students and actively support diversity to foster awareness and inclusion.
Cooperative Living
Members are true stakeholders, managing the co-op together. In addition to affordable rent that simply covers operational costs, members participate in biweekly house meetings, complete a quarterly Service Requirement, and contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of our homes. With no profits made, every dollar goes toward sustaining our houses, supporting staff, repaying loans, and reinvesting in our community.
Opportunities for Growth and Engagement
We allocate a portion of our budget to fund member-led projects, educational programs, and workshops, empowering our members to make a positive impact and build valuable skills. Each co-op member is encouraged to contribute ideas and take advantage of these resources to enrich their experience.
Environmentally Responsible Living
SBSHC is committed to sustainable practices, encouraging our members to engage in eco-friendly living and work together to reduce our environmental footprint.
