What we do

The Values
We are in the beginning stages of forming an intentional community on commonly shared land that is guided by three S’s: spirituality, sustainability, and social justice.
Spirituality – We believe we are connected to something much larger than ourselves and beyond the merely material, call it God, Creator, the Universe, the Cosmos. It is this belief that gives way to the deeper meaning of connection, a great weaver that weaves the fabric of life together. We pay homage to this Creator in the many interfaith forms in which it is manifested and engage in a collective and ongoing conversation and exploration of faith traditions, stories, philosophies, values, and rituals of multiple religions unrestricted by dogma.
Sustainability – We believe that all of creation has agency and life. Therefore it must be respected and protected. We envision our community being a place where we are a part of the ecosystem – from sustainable gardening practices, to carbon neutral dwellings, to efficient animal husbandry, to forms of activism outside of the community. We aim to be a visible gateway and witness to what needs to be in the here and now to preserve, heal, and restore to its natural course of evolution the natural and human world.
Social Justice – We believe that all beings are equally and wonderfully made. From the human person to the Joshua trees all are made equally. We live in a society that does not value the equality of the human person and does not value the pricelessness of the Joshua trees. We aim to be a visible witness to a society that knows and lives out equality for all. We will endeavor to create a safe and inclusive environment that is of welcome to people who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other communities which know oppression. We also aim to create a space where the physical environment is upheld and honored as its own life force. And we seek to creatively and courageously challenge the assumptions, habits, systems, and structures of ourselves and the world that continue this oppression and dishonor.
The Vision
We envision creating a multi-family Catholic Worker farm along the urban-rural divide. It would be far enough from the city to form a space of peace, retreat, and the growing of organic food and native plants, but close enough to the city to support the work of justice among its residents and to be in collaboration with the other intentional communities and justice organizations there, in particular the Mustard Seed, St. Francis and St. Teresa Catholic Worker, and Annunciation House.
Our tentative name is Makarioi Catholic Worker Farm, which refers to the Greek term often translated as blessed or happy in the Beatitudes and which designates to the joy that comes with living in accord with these core Gospel teachings. The community will aim to organize its life according to these Beatitudes – that is to be beggars in spirit, mourning for the pain and loss of the world, being gentle and nonviolent, hungering and thirsting for justice, showing mercy, having integrity of intention, actively making peace, and accepting persecution for the sake of justice.
Recognizing that structures of injustice, exclusion, and oppression have robbed many people of the ability to participate fully in society and denied society the fruits of diverse experiences, ways of thinking, and cultures, the Markarioi will be a diverse community and take active steps toward including members of historically excluded and oppressed groups as full and equal participants in community life and communal governance. These groups include but are not limited to those of the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. Steps taken will include active participation in the work to eliminate racial, economic, and sexual injustice, participation in circles that include diverse membership, and the formation of a nonprofit to subsidize the cost of membership for those otherwise unable to acquire shares. The community will seek to embody St. Paul’s Body of Christ image in which different members will have different roles according to their gifts and experiences but where all such roles are equally respected and work together toward the common good.
The Community
We’re hoping that about 3 to 4 other families would share this land and vision with us, while each having their own dwelling and living space. We intend to engage in some form of hospitality on this land in a way that aligns with all residents’ privacy and safety needs. In addition to the core residential group, we envision this community containing a number of concentric circles of supporters, organizations, and communities (including the Worcester Catholic Worker communities and Agape) that participate in community life and collaborate in mission in various ways.
The community as a whole and each of its members will engage in the work of social justice in micro, mezzo, and macro ways, of which the community will decide the frequency, participation, duration, and display of such social action. Four areas of particular focus will be:
Providing therapeutic and spiritual healing in communion with nature
Providing hospitality and support to people experiencing homelessness
Serving as a witness to communal and sustainable living and encouraging others to adopt similar practices in their own lives
Engaging in direct action seeking systemic change

Our Vision

To form a small village composed of multiple families sharing life together and committed to spirituality, social justice, and sustainability and to serve as an example or model for a more communal and intentional way of life beyond the village.

How to join

We intend for all future land and structures to be held in entirely an LLC, whose shares will be held by community members/residents, so membership will involve two stages – meeting and getting to know the current members and purchasing shares of the LLC. As the land is not yet acquired, the structures not yet built, and the LLC not yet formed we invite potential partners to reach out to us to begin the first stage as well as collaborate with us to acquire land, begin to build structures, and form the LLC. Our vision is a work in progress and subject to adjustment by consensus of potential members.

Basic expectations or agreements for members

Email us and we’ll schedule a time to meet. While we do not yet have land, we have a prospective large house in mind within an existing eco-village that we would propose to split three ways with some private and some common space and the current owner is open to potential community members visiting

Primary decision-making authority

  • All Community Members Together

The whole membership decides collectively.

Governance structure

  • Sociocratic/Circle-Based

Organized in circles or domains with distributed authority.

Economic model

  • Independent Finances

Members maintain separate personal finances with minimal sharing.

Economic scenarios for this community

  • There is a one-time fee, investment, or share purchase to join the community separate from accessing housing
  • There is a labor obligation
  • Members typically need to have their own job or other personal source of income to cover their expenses while living in the community?

Additional economic information

Join fee: Yes (amount not specified)
Labor: Encouraged or suggested
Members with pre-existing debt: Yes
Acquiring a property and constructing an eco-village will be a piecemeal process and require the support of several partners contributing financially or through their labor and expertise to the cost of acquisition, construction, and other incidentals. We intend for the entirety of the land and its structures to be owned by an LLC, rather than any individual, family, or organization although any of these may receive and own shares in return for contributions to the completion of the project. Shares would be distributed in proportion to the value of the financial contribution and/or the costs offset by the contribution of labor and expertise. Shares will be sellable, allowing partners and other contributors to at least recoup their investment in the future. The initial structure and residence (future common house) requires the financial support of a second founding and resident partner family. Voting will be by consensus of all members with any shares – those with more shares will not have greater votes. A nonprofit will ultimately be set up to help raise funds to subsidize the costs of prospective members.

Shared resources and amenities that are accessible to everyone in the community

Common House, Garden(s), Vehicle Share, Library, Workshop, Swimming pond or pool, Hot tub or hot springs, Large Scale Kitchen, Fire pit, Swingsets & play areas, Internet

Frequency of communal meals

  • 2-5 times per week

Seeking Couples Interested in Long Term Deep Connection & Farming (open to singles)

Description Our  sloped and terraced community farm has far more potential than we have time and energy to use to the fullest. We have been in community for 15 years now, but feeling pulled to the deeper nourishment we find in long-term residents over shorter-term interns.  We seek one to two couples (or super aligned singles) who are interested in conscious connection, intimate conversation, personal growth and healing, regenerative agriculture, and serious about a building a life in community.  Although we hold space and flexibility for shifts in needs, we desire humans who plan to stay for all or part of a season (1-3 months at a minimum), after which we would explore longer-term alignment and relationships.  We MAY also be open to folks wanting to live off-site, as long as we prioritize ample time to explore how we work together before we get too deep. Current Use Heart 2 Heart Farms is a small, forested, 10 acre Permaculture farm nestled in the fertile hills of the Willamette Valley. Between the quaint towns of Newberg and Sherwood, this oasis is in the middle of wine country, just 30 minutes south of Portland, has been an intentional community and teaching facility for over 15 years, hosting a myriad of community outreach, up-cycling, homesteading, and prepping workshops.  Although we have recently slowed substantially, residents should be prepared for both a busy environment, and shared, informal, mixed-use spaces. We are almost completely self-sufficient, producing large varieties of heirloom fruits and vegetables, and we breed, butcher, and sometimes sell heritage chickens, turkeys, rabbits, pigs, goats, sheep, and cattle. We tan hides, carve bone, save seed, occasionally blow glass, throw pottery, create alternative/green energy, dig root cellars, and build constantly. We have three large un/under-utilized areas available: The front hill is a terraced and amended south-facing slope that has LOTS of room and potential. We also have a poultry pasture is 2 acres of partially wooded Douglas Fir, an additional 4 acres of wooded mixed use browsing space and native habitat that’s virtually unused at the moment, two large greenhouses (including one set up aquaponically), and lots of space to expand the orchard and rotational grazing system. Additionally, we have a 20’x40′ healing center and sacred space we use for yoga, massage, reiki, ceremony (including traditional Lakota sweat lodge and grief/trauma work), and make available to local practitioners to offer their services to the community. If you are wanting to connect deeply, work hard, learn and expand your experience base, and participate in a small but established intentional community, shoot us a note and let’s explore. Owner’s Short Term Vision for the Property Our short-term goal is to find/train a few young/new farmers to assist with land stewardship and increase productivity of the existing space to spread out the work/responsibility and assist in overall streamlining and cleanup of the existing farm/operations. Owner’s Long Term Vision for the Property Our long-term vision is to continue to use this space as a teaching and educational facility, expanding the diversity and frequency of events we can host and services we can offer. Over the next few years, we hope to find an a couple interested in learning/independently managing most of the farm production, which will allow us to dig deeper into the training and certification we make available, to include natural building, basic and advanced Permaculture technique and application, beekeeping, horticulture, animal husbandry, food preservation, fermentation, plant identification/natural foraging, and primitive skills. Available Water / Irrigation Extensive rainwater collection on site, as well as a high-flow/capacity well. Soil Type / Quality Sandy loam with great organic matter, good clay content, and established vermiculture and mycorrhizal network. Buildings and Structures Available for Farm Use We have multiple barns and greenhouse space for use, or lease, depending on the particulars of use/situation. Farm Equipment Available for Use We have a skid steer on site, as well as rototiller, chipper, 26′ truck, and pickup trucks for use. Hand tools are also available, depending on the arrangement. Any Restrictions That Could Limit Agricultural Production Creating and supporting natural borders, food forests, and wildlife habitat (and incorporating these into a holistic/natural pest management strategy) is a very high priority to us, so intensive mono-crop/large machine harvesting and/or crops needing spraying/chemicals are not likely a fit on this site. County: Washington Total Acreage: 10 Acreage Available to Landseeker: 5 Current Farming Practices: Organic, Not Certified, Biodynamic, Dry Farming, Season Extension Farming Practices Allowed: Certified Organic, Organic, Not Certified, Biodynamic, Dry Farming, Season Extension Agriculture Types Suitable: Beans, Bees, Berries, Dairy, Fiber Animals, Flowers, Goats, Herbs, Hogs, Mushrooms, Nursery Stock, Nuts, Orchard/Fruit, Pasture, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, Vegetables, Vineyard, Other
