What we do

HIVE Hawaii is based in a coastal neighborhood called Kalapana Seaview Estates that is the closest thing to an ad hoc ecovillage we have ever found. Most of the 100s of homes in our neighborhood are off-grid (we all depend on rainwater catchment for our water) and there is a lot of food growing nearby including permaculture homesteads with food forests.

Our location is 1.5 miles to the best beach in the area and 8 miles to a free volcanic hot spring on the beach. There are conscious events happening in this area every day making it feel almost like being at a transformational festival all year long. You can walk to multiple venues from our location including Kalani- the birthplace of ecstatic dance- where we dance at least once a week in a sacred ceremony of healing connection. We have at least 4 ecstatic dances in the region every week (sometimes more).

Currently HIVE consists of a small property with a multi-family dwelling  with large gathering space for events/groups, the property includes:

~ 2 one-bedroom units
~ a 2-bedroom unit that has one room open
~ a 3-bedroom unit that can be rented by one family or shared

HIVE Hawaii has primarily accommodated short-term residents on-site in the past, but we are looking to expand with longer term residents starting Spring 2024.

We are also surrounded by many long-term community members who comprise our leadership team and network of practitioners. We host programs and services onsite focused on healing, and have a co-working space for people who work remotely to work together. We have had pop-up restaurants onsite, and dream of eventually having a little cafe become part of our coworking space.

Our Vision

HIVE Hawaii curates Healing Inspiring Village Experiences as a social permaculture hub and incubator for cocreative culture we support co-living, co-working, and co-healing to actualize a culture of caring and sharing. We are waking up together in paradise.

2 small bedroom cabins available in Aptos Beloved Community - open to work trade

Aptos Beloved Community is an emerging multicultural ecovillage in the early stages of formation. Our guiding mission is to co-create a flourishing world for all as a friendly living laboratory in Earth Reverence, Personal Responsibility, Cultural Healing, Creative Expression, and Revolutionary Love. Currently there are 12 adults, two awesomely autistic young adults, three sweet dogs, and 20 laying hens enjoying 7 acres of land together. We range in age from 25-75 and bring our share of diversity: straight, queer and asexual; cis gendered, transgender, non-binary and gender fluid; European American, Mexican American, Korean and Korean American; born into families with and without money. Among us are entrepreneurs, trauma healing counselors, immigrants, activists, students of Chinese medicine and psychology, contractors, poets, writers, avid hikers and backpackers, dance and yoga teachers, caregivers, nonprofit fundraisers, and gardening enthusiasts. We are monogamous and polyamorous, neurotypical and neurodivergent, vegan and omnivorous. We practice diverse spiritual and religious traditions. We share the land with many wild creatures – coyote, deer, owls, hawks – and are surrounded by oaks and redwoods. We’re located just off Soquel Drive by Cabrillo College, minutes from New Brighton State Beach and the Forest of Nisene Marks in Santa Cruz County. What We’re Building We have an outdoor classroom for small-scale events, several permaculture-based food forest orchards and gardens, an infrared sauna, cold plunge, hot tub, and outdoor bathtub overlooking our beautiful meadow. We’re actively working on rainwater catchment systems, humanure composting, water retention landscaping, oak woodland restoration, greywater systems, and dreaming of a cob sauna. Stewarding our ecovillage from vision to reality is a primary focus here. We’re looking for folks who are excited about this in theory AND in real-life practice. Experience and ski
