About the Community

What we do

~ Co-Sharing Earth with People of the Earth ~ Coregalando Tierra con Pueblo de la Tierra ~ (Our Village Motto) Description – “Snake Village is an Animism-Centric commune sharing art, power & provisions with All for global solidarity with indigenous ways.” ***Donations Welcome & Volunteer Work toward Dwellings Needed*** Forge of Brigit ~Snake Village – an Animism-Centric Commune igniting a pluralist tradition of radical hospitality, simple living and restorative revolution of love in a 5 acre garden on a human-made lake in the Ouachita Mts on the Eastern side of Rich Mt. (looking into the mountain to the West and toward “Fourche Mt.” to the North) We live with the elements and the seasons, heating mostly with wood stove and no A/C, eating as much food from the land as we can. We are far from big cities but close to town. Our communal aspects center around the South-Western quarter community center “The Welcoming Circle for Diversity, Solidarity and Earth Care,” which used to be a motor cycle shop and has a garden in-design in it’s landscape of flow. We like our routine and our communal peace in our daily pace and slow growth. No community entrance fees nor ongoing dues. We donate as we can toward a common purse and it all works out. ***There are currently TWO of us rooted Vocational Villagers/Residents with an Seeding Villager living on site and extended community*** Our communal podcast can be found at https://www.youtube.com/@roundtablebrigitskitchen2665 and we’re looking to get a website. We’re organizing with locals in the Welcoming Circle forming a solidarity network called “Ouachita Collaborative Cultivators (O.C.C.)” for direct action and mutual aid. OCC loves when Snake Villagers participate to spread localized mutual-aid together, agitate the working class, organize, educate, inoculate and UNITE! We, OCC, have a boost of morale when, we, Snake Villagers coordinate and/or attend OCC events and especially encourage participation in direct actions and picket lines! Since 6/6/22 we’ve shared 5 acres of communal land as equals in our two Irrevocable Trusts – courthouse registered. After a half-moon visit any friends who’d like to add value to our gift economy for a year can co-own the Trusts by signing as Trustees w no fee. No one is a boss nor landlord here – we’re all proudly working-class! Some of us are glad to be Wooblies of the IWW, ONE BIG UNION while also uniting with emergent syndicates. Our solidarity is branching out into our bioregion. We are permaculture & biodynamic gardeners, tend many blueberry bushes and always keep a couple of chickens. Us two who were caregivers for 3.5 yrs. of an elder, Jean Marie Zirger. Jean Marie had Alzheimer’s Disease and cocreated eco-sustainability with the land for 33 years as a Permaculture Design Certificate instructor. A transgender pagan, she spun threads between this place and witches in the Reclaiming Tradition of Tejas Web. Jean Marie granted this land to Snake Village June ’22 and passed July 18th, 2022. We honored her that Fall Equinox in the intricate outdoor stone paved ritual circle she built to Hecate with a vibrant memorial which still spirals in our hearts as we enter into the following Winter. Now we bring forward a new chapter in remembering the past while stepping firmly into tomorrow with confidence to welcome new co-founders. JMZ – what is remembered lives. Blessed Yule. We’re actively seeking new co-founding Comrades who are on the same page, Guests, Friends of the Village, Alliances with other groups, “Pollinating Villagers” (seasonal Residents), “Orbiting Villagers” (non-residential; see below) and “Village Birds” (focused presence for 6-12 moons). Families, children and older adults welcome :D We live together communally in solidarity, collaboration and mutual aid; and in critique of Capitalism, Global Empire, and Fascism. We recognize the sovereignty of the Kadohadacho and Tula Nations who have been displaced 187 years, 8 months, and 30 days as of Halloween 2023, and now sustain their culture 300 miles West of here in Binger, OK with Caddo Tribal Members around the globe. It is our interest to build any bridges we can and a couple of Caddo nation members are in our extended community. We seek to support Rematriation and study the mounds around us and how the Caddo have maintained their connection to the mountains and pastures and prairies with whom they were divinely invited into relation. We stand in solidarity to end global colonialism. We are: *growing food* with the principles of permaculture and offering surplus harvest on the side of the highway as a free gift when we have it; *sustaining a blacksmithing room and house of hospitality devoted to Brigit*; *demonstrating to promote solidarity* and to meet new comrades, *struggling with other common folks* for working-class liberation; *making art* for the sake of art and to promote counter-culture; *having perpetual conversation* on gender-defiance, consent, class-consciousness, pluralism within the Catholic Worker Movement, overcoming the categorizations of race; and *making herbal medicine* from the land and distributing it to local folk* *We make decisions by modified consensus.* Politically we believe, in one sense of the word, we must embrace the current conflict and transform society for the working class in universality with all life; in another sense we feel politics are the religion of the empire’s sword, set about to divide us with semantics. We promote and act upon the

Our Mission

~ Nathair rind: cúartugad alltar~ – Old Irish of Snake Village Epigram “Snake constellating: Around the world.” Snake Village Vision “We envision a world: Wherein we offer each other mutual support in a gift economy: celebrating each other’s inherent worth and dignity, all cocreating according to our ability, and all receiving according to our need; Wherein we are all maturing our personal skills in the shared craft of permaculture, living in Old Growth Forests we’ve tended in these Mountains, sharing all the Earth as one wild affectionate commons, and understanding the story we chose to leave behind where the capitalist industrial world would have killed us all, choosing instead cocreativity and sharing of skills in honor of all life; Wherein we’ve decided living together in constellated villages was a good idea and we embody kindness, trust, accountability, responsibility, equity, inclusion and communication, knowing our own personal power & worth from within; Wherein all indigenous nations’ sovereignty is universally empowered and everyone exercises self-determination in showing up to make decisions collaboratively in our constellations of federation councils with all beings: stars, animals, rocks, plants, fungi, humans, bio-regions and everybody; Wherein all solidarity centered paths and spiritualities are celebrated, recognizing every place as a sanctuary in veneration of the ancestors who came before us and the ancestors yet to come. We are holding collective responsibility to move our society into this world.” (This Snake Village Vision consensed after revisiting with new Villagers 5 days before Samain, 2022 from the original collaboratively formed Dark Moon after Spring Equinox, 2021)

How to join

The Village commons is open to folks as we reflect, improve the infrastructure of the commons and recharge enthusiasm to welcome new scholars, labor organizers, ecologists, druids, channelers, witches, guests, blacksmiths, dragons, networkers, mycologists, poets, evolutionary faeries disguised as humans, actresses, chefs, story tellers, drummers, bards, hut architects, three-sisters green thumbs, water-catchment plumbers, path clearers, We are in the co-founding stage The two of us who are currently Vocational “Groving” Villagers (both of whom are temporary “Co-Umbilicals” were here some years to cofound and then moved forward to Ireland in Spring 2025) help weave in new people who are interested to uphold solidarity with us and spin a web for the coming generations. Visiting as a guest and then going back home after two to three moon-quarters with us for one moon cycle waiting either to be invited back or not, and being invited back is a pre-requisite to deepening roots as a Vocational “Groving” Villager. In all this process takes a year. One can decide in that time if their interested in coming back as a guest or as a Experiencing “Sprouting” Villager (toward “Rooting” then “Groving” Villagerhood) and we get space to collect our collective perspective as well and contact them to let them know after that moon cycle. 11 ways to participate in Snake Village’s “Web”: 1. Friend – a person who is an ally to our work and shares similar values and aids us to move forward to our goals, also co-worker-owners of our business. 2. Guests – anyone visiting for less than 6 moons with a purpose to be enriched by the commune 3. Orbiter – doesn’t live with the community and acts as an ambassador of the common vision, upholding a commitment to the Village’s mutual-aid for 6 moons then with annual expression of connection 4. Bird – lives here 6 moons to a year with intention to complete a project toward the Village’s goals and values 5. Experiencing “Seeding” Villager – has been invited back and looks towards deeper roots with the Village; a gate-way time to see what life is like here and how personal/communal experience is w phase 1 of our allied-discernment process (featuring workshops): “Lighting the Forge Fires for Discernment” (a moon cycle at least, after being here at least a quarter moon cycle as a guest). 6. Novice “Rooting” Villager – moves into phase 2 of discernment – “Hot Filing Iron into the Soils of Personal Vocation” – their vocation w Snake Village (11 moon cycles, one year from the beginning of Seeding Villagerhood) 7. Vocational “Groving” Villager – has chosen to place their craft and skill with this Village and has completed Seeding and Rooting; deciding to contribute oneself to the collective Vision, Path and Goals for the long-haul, nurturing others with this work as seasons turn. Democratic collaboration on the land trust. 8. Pollinating Villager – Deep roots and seasonal chapters of life with Forge of Brigit ~ The walking tree 9. Co-Umbilical Villager – just as witches have assisted birth illegally neither as parent nor child some Villagers help a project or community begin then gradually let go 10. Extended Community – Alliance between a group and the Village 11. Village Scholar (a kind of Bird and/or Vocational Villager) – Connectors-of-Dots who deepen our village and civil-ecology’s research for however long and eventually in conjunction with other campuses of a future interfaith religious worker self-directed 501(c)3 non-profit free gift-economy university with a Collegia of Cooperative Labor Polity, Collegia of Permaculture; Arts and Tools for Healing Ourselves, & Collegia of Radiance; Sacred Crafts of Immanence, schools for STEM, Bardistry & Clowning, Medicine and with alternative eco-pedagogy such as Paulo Freirian theory. 99-83 years ago Commonwealth College provided a similar social function 12 miles South of Snake Village. We acknowledge the trail they blazed for radical unionist and communalist working class art, mobilizing and thinking and that they’d still be going if they hadn’t been sentenced and fined $5,000 by the Polk Co. Court for not raising the American flag during school hours, the promotion of anarcho-socialism and also for displaying a hammer and sickle on their bell tower. We seek to archive and continue their work here and to open centers for Scholars of mutual aid and common wealth everywhere. 12. “Guest” – pre-anything else, this is one first to three quarter moon cycles vibing with Snake Village in person 13. Reflecting Villager – for perspective and recollection of one’s experiences, this is the three nights with some distance from Snake Village campuses after one’s first moon quarter with vibing with us; also this is the 3-6 months Sabbatical a Groving Villager goes on after (at most) every 4 years of collaborating on with the village on our Path. Process for Vocational and Pollinating Villager: a. Visit or Fill out our Questionnaire (but message us before filling it out because over this Winter we’re making major changes to it and shortening it significantly because you’d be visiting us before moving in for any longer than 3-quarters of a moon stay anyway) b. Meet with our Village Council about joining during your visit as a Guest of 2-3 moon-quarters, then take one moon or more from the village to reflect and for the village to reflect. c. Either be invited back (or not and hear the reasons we don’t feel it’s a good fit, or do get invited back and decide on your end it’s not a good fit) and if invited back and have decided to discern further with us and your spirit guides – see what it’s like to live here for 3 moon cycles as a “Seeding” Villager d. Deepen consideration for 9 moon cycles as a “Rooting” Novice Villager e. Be Signed on as a Trustee (co-owner) and Welcomed as a Vocational “Groving” Villager e.1. Pollinators are Vocational “Groving” Villagers (talk with Council about your seasonal living plans) ***Process for Orbiting Villager:*** 1. Visit and/or Fill out our Questionnaire (available at https://s.surveyplanet.com/j8sva05q) (but message us before filling it out because over this Winter we’re making major changes to it and shortening it significantly because you’d be visiting us before moving in for any longer than 3-quarters of a moon stay anyway) 2. Meet with our Village Council about Orbiting 3. Custom centering of focus and connection with us for 11 moons 4. Be Welcomed as a Orbiting Villager annually as long as you like. Renew vows every three years or annually. ***Process for Village Bird & Scholar:*** 1. Visit and/or Fill out our Questionnaire (but message us before filling it out because over this Winter we’re making major changes to it and shortening it significantly because you’d be visiting us before moving in for any longer than 3-quarters of a moon stay anyway) 2. Meet with our Village Council about “Birding” during your visit of 1-3 moon-quarters, then take a moon from the village to reflect. 3. Be welcomed as a Bird for 3 MOONS-1 year )0( Scholars as long as they need (can also take the path of a Vocational Villager). (we have an annual Interfaith Village Vision Celebration to recognize all the ways people are connecting with us, take vows as holy promises to our commune, and to ritually tell our story) The Web is a collaborative living-publication of the Snake Village Web Weavers Circle and a pdf of the full text is available by request. Children are weaving into the life of the village and our Child Tending Guild grew a corpus of experiences and aids our consideration in assessing what support from adults is here and what isn’t as we value each child and prioritize their experience of life as core if anyone is interested to live here with a child. Currently we’re taking things case by case and generally feel we need to create better infrastructure before supporting another child directly as a village. Ultimately, it is our goal for the commune to be the social alternative, hence to encompass all generations, to have inter-household support for children, and to educate them well with a sense of selfhood in the world, and connection with their bioregion; we will always be inclusive of children. Hopefully 12 channelers of elderhood are planning to move here so we can co-spin this web of elders.
