About the Community

What we do

Dunmire Hollow (est. 1973) is a community of about ten people sharing their lives and 163 acres in a magic hollow in Tennessee. We have fields, orchards, gardens, woods, springs, creeks, a community center, a woodshop, ponds, a food co-op, family houses, etc. Each family is economically independent; we make/have made our livings in a variety of ways–teaching, construction, woodworking, nursing, doctoring, auto repair, sewing, truck driving, small-engine repair, and crafts–and from providing for ourselves more directly through domestic economy and barter. As individuals, we have a variety of enthusiasms that often involve us with the world and other people: organic gardening, music, crafts, environmentalism, peace work, sports, community networking, aquaculture, alternative energy, etc. Each resident adds to the diverse mix that makes up our community. We are happy to communicate with people who are interested in rural-community living. We enjoy visitors; please write for more information or to arrange a visit. At this time, all 10 adults and the two children here are vaccinated. We are happy to communicate with vaccinated people who are interested in our community. We expect that any visitors will be willing to abide by any covid protocols that the community requests.

How to join

After an introductory visit, if things look promising, we set up a longer visit of 3-4 weeks. If that goes well, we set up a provisional resident membership. Between 12 & 15 months later, the community and the provisional resident make a decision whether the person will become a permanent resident or be required to leave the community.
