About the Community

What we do

For the last 30+ years, Blackberry has been a close-knit intentional family committed to living, working, learning, and growing together in the Sierra foothills north of Nevada City, California. We placed much value on raising our children and ourselves in a nonviolent, healthy emotional and physical environment. There were only 2 of us living here full-time for a number of years (the children are grown and thriving), were joined by 2 additional adult members at the end of 2015 for 5 years, and are now just the 2 of us again. As an intentional-family style community, we had a collective economic system. Each adult paid a share of food and utility expenses, as well as an additional monthly amount into a maintenance and repair fund. We prepared and ate most dinners together and met regularly to discuss short and long-term plans, our cottage industry and garden, and to share the joys of everyday life in our forest home. Please email us for our current status.

Our Mission

We are activists and homesteaders, striving for self-sufficiency and working to facilitate a more just world.

How to join

We ask for people to come for an initial visit of a week or so, after which time we will evaluate whether we get along well enough to continue living together. Adults are expected to pay or trade for their share of food and utilities during their visit. Since we are not currently accepting new members, we are evaluating aspects of our processes, including how people join Blackberry. Please contact us for updates.
