About the Community

What we do

Black Bulga is a small intentional community of people who are custodians of a beautiful piece of land in the Upper Monkerai Valley – in the foothills of the Barrington Wilderness, New South Wales, Australia. We pay our respects to the Worimi people, the traditional owners of this country. We strive to live in harmony with nature and with each other, and to tread lightly on the earth. We share a vision of just and sustainable future and actively engage in the world to help make this vision a reality. As part of this vision, we intend to create an inspiring educational, arts and ecology centre to actively engage the wider community in our work for social change towards a more ecological and just society. We are a group of passionate people who are ambitious about creating a sustainable future, and who are willing to work hard to enact our vision on our land for the benefit of our community and others In early 2010, we purchased a beautiful block of land at the confluence of the Karuah and Teleghery rivers on the edge of the Barrington wilderness. Something about the sweet taste of the river water, the cool, deep swimming holes, stunning views and fertile soil made it easy for our group to realise that we had finally found the place we had been looking for. All our members intend to be vaccinated against COVID-19. For now, we’re very careful to manage the risk of transmission. It’s important to us. We believe in science and follow expert health advice. Email us for further details. Note: Our joining process requires potential new members to visit regularly, so it’s probably not feasible for people residing in other countries to join. Visitors are welcome.
