About the Community

What we do

Arthur Morgan school is a day/boarding school for 7-9th graders. It’s also an intensely communal place where most full time staff members live on campus in community with each other and practice consensus decision making, live in shared housing, share the majority of maintenance and grounds work, administer the educational program without a head of school, receive very similar salaries, and share many meals together. We’re located within a larger ecovillage northwest of Asheville, North Carolina, on a property surrounded by streams and National Forrest land. We are mostly “on grid,” though we do have a solar field and generally heat with wood from the property. The educational program is a progressive mix of outdoor education, vocational and trade skills, and liberal arts, delivered by teachers with lots of curricular freedom who tend to tailor the program to the students they have in any given year.

Our Mission

The mission of Arthur Morgan School is to provide a safe and loving environment where students in grades 7, 8, and 9 learn to question and evaluate, think creatively and work independently and cooperatively, while sharing in a community that honors simplicity, respect, responsibility and thoughtful consideration.

How to join

There are many roles (full time staff, part time staff, houseparent-only, teaching intern, garden intern, renter, etc.) and most of them are open on a rolling basis, except for new students, who join in the fall excepting unusual circumstances. We’re a place that both has a strong history of keeping certain roles and experiments with new roles frequently. Our average turnover might be something like 5 years, but there have been many people who have stayed much longer as well as many people that have passed through in a year or two. The interview process for each role is different, with full time staff hires being the most formal.
