What we do

Come check out AnimAJourney where the World of Tomorrow Starts Today! AnimAJourney is located in a rural small subdivision. We are part of a neighborhood of some like-minded neighbors who are living a similar lifestyle and similar values. AnimAJourney is currently two adults who have been living a life of voluntary simplicity in many ways: P.V. solar, composting, organic/veganic gardening and orcharding, building with concrete [building for 200 to 400 years – or more, fireproof, sounds are moderated, termite-proof], mostly live (raw) vegan foods, ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ [we know those terms are sometimes difficult to define, and people have differing perspectives on them] and integrated living. One of our neighbors is EarthReleaf, another ‘sustainable’ property. Most of our neighbors, for example, get their electricity with P.V. solar, and live fairly quiet lives. Some have been activists [such as keeping electrical poles from being installed]. We have regular fun activities, and plan to incorporate more. We’d like to have people stay with us in our groovy & beautiful cabins [or camping] who are interested in friendship, short-term or long-term stays, internships, and becoming friends of AnimAJourney. Our goal is to have a vegan team corporation where the members have shares. We plan to have a vegan lab, for example. We see ourselves as a grain of sand in the beach of the evolutionary transformation in the world. Come learn from us and share your knowledge. We love live foods because they love us back. We strive for harmonious living using Miguel Ruiz’s “Four Agreements” and “The Five Agreements,” among other things, so if you haven’t read Ruiz’s books, we recommend them. We want to draw people here who are of like mind, of course. We especially are interested in connecting/hanging out with those who are fascinated in exploring the psychosocial frontier. Maybe take a vow of levity? :) The World of Tomorrow is Today at AnimAJourney!

Our Vision

Our mission is the evolutionary transformation where we have a vegan team, vegan lab, business incubator, and legacy project.
We are an off-the-grid “community” where we grow as much of our own food as possible [we have several raised concrete garden beds, but we are mostly orchardists with over 100 trees]. We’d like to build a community or group of friends, perhaps some of whom live on our property, and some of whom live nearby. Our idea of “Friends of AnimAJourney” means just that: we want to broaden our base of friends of like-minded people and improve the world a little piece at a time.
We are especially interested in libertarian-minded, freedom-minded, civil liberties-minded individuals who do not follow the mainstream ‘sheeple’ mentality. Any lawyers, accountants, doctors, or paper-work gurus who would love to be part of making the World of Tomorrow Happen Today would be welcome!

How to join

ideally we are looking for “Friends of AnimAJourney” where people will stay with us for a while [time-frame is negotiable], get to know us, and then see if people want to stay permanently. Our long-term plan is to buy adjacent land and then add it to AnimAJourney, and then perhaps re-sell it to prospective members and/or lease it. But, this is all in a state of flux, and we are open to other ideas.

Basic expectations or agreements for members

contact us as far ahead of time as possible; car is very helpful, but bus is available [gotta walk about two 1/2 miles or so to get to bus stop]; be prepared for being in a rural location; expect mostly raw [live] food vegan fare (but visitors/guests/potential members are not required to be raw fooders]; we appreciate open and honest communication; be prepared for ‘rugged’ property and unpaved roads.

Primary decision-making authority

  • Small Leadership Group

A few people (not elected by the broader community) make the major decisions.

Governance structure

  • Representative/Democratic

Members elect leaders who make decisions within defined roles.

Economic model

  • Independent Finances

Members maintain separate personal finances with minimal sharing.

Economic scenarios for this community

  • There is a one-time fee, investment, or share purchase to join the community separate from accessing housing
  • Members need to pay fees, dues, or similar to live there on a per month or per year basis
  • There is a labor obligation
  • Members typically need to have their own job or other personal source of income to cover their expenses while living in the community?

Additional economic information

Join fee: Yes (amount not specified)
Monthly fees/dues: Yes (amount not specified)
Labor required: 20 hours/week
Members with pre-existing debt: No
Note on contributing to taking care of property: no ‘members’ are ‘required’ to do this, but we do because we choose to and because there are always things to be done [and we LOVE to see our trees grow and produce!]. Plus, our plans or visions will not be accomplished without devoting time to the property. Both members ‘work’ [or play, depending on how you look at it] on the property 3-6 days per week. Visitors are encouraged to engage in this “play” time [the AnimAJourney gym!], but not required [depending on arrangements/agreements made ahead of time]. Arrangements can be made on an individual basis. However, at this time, we can’t afford to have the exchange be only hours of taking care of property in exchange for staying [i.e., we are not able to grow all of our own food at this time; visitors have to buy some for themselves].

Generally, visiting/staying at AnimAJourney would look like this: first visit, people donate for room & board; second visit, partial contributions; after that, negotiable. Additionally, we can talk about other options.

We are looking for “friends of AnimAJourney” and joining can be discussed [we are still in our own discussion phase about what ‘joining’ would look like].

Join us in the mountains of Western North Carolina

Coweeta Heritage Center/Talking Rock Farm is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Coweeta is located in a beautiful and diverse temperate rain forest. It feels very remote here yet we are just 12 miles from Franklin, NC. Winters can be mild. Coweeta is blessed with springs and a stream, pristine forests, and abundant wildlife. Power is provided by a hydro-electric system which is not connected to the grid. An organic garden and trout pond provide healthy food that is also shared with the local community. Hiking, kayaking, and other outdoor activities are just out the back door. Coweeta is looking for others who would like to join together to form an Intentional Community embracing the principles of Voluntary Simplicity. Simply put (no pun intended): We wish “to live simply so that others may simply live.” It is a recognition that nature provides us with valuable services and resources that we can use to enrich our lives. Utilizing local resources, appropriate technology, and working cooperatively, we can discover creative ways to meet our needs as “directly and simply as possible.”. An example of this, in the tradition of many Indigenous People”, is to gather, and use wildcrafted foods as part of our diet. There is great joy in going to nature’s grocery for our sustenance. Voluntary Simplicity is based on the recognition that “very little is needed to live well” and that “abundance is a state of mind.” Living lower on the economic ladder allows us more time and freedom to pursue other life goals: community and social engagement, family time, artistic or intellectual projects, more fulfilling employment, political participation, sustainable living, spiritual exploration, and more. According to the Voluntary Collective, “The grounding assumption of Voluntary Simplicity is that all human beings have the potential to live meaningful, free, happy and infinitely diverse lives while consuming no more than an equitable share of (the world’s) resources.” We affirm the need for a work/life balance, the right to a healthy environment and healthy food, and healthy community relationships supporting a diverse population. It is our responsibility as engineers of a new generation to make the changes that we want to see happen and pass this on to the next generations. We can’t wait for someone else to do this important work. Voluntary Simplicity is a quiet revolution that can change the world. As one person said, “we must be poets of our own lives and of a new generation.” We hope you will join us here at Coweeta or elsewhere on our journey to a healthier and more sustainable future! Temporary housing is available in a 27 foot trailer trailer with attached deck next to a creek while we build additional housing. Your basic living expenses (shelter, basic food items, power and water) are met through our market garden or other fundraising projects that you will participate in. You are expected to contribute a given amount of your time and energy to help grow our community and meet our financial obligations. Possible future plans include establishing a retreat center for healing our earth and each other. Work includes organic gardening, construction projects and other community building activities. Come join Coweeta and learn how to live lightly on the land and enjoy the Earth’s bounty!
