The Future of Cohousing

REGISTER NOW

Join Bryan Bowen of Caddis Collaborative to learn how the traditional model of cohousing in the US is being cleverly adapted to reflect emerging community needs.

An idea originally imported from Denmark, cohousing has taken root and evolved in the US and Canada as well as other countries around the world. There are many great examples of the tried-and-true model of 24-36 privately owned homes organized around meaningful common spaces with the design intent of creating community through participation and sharing.

There are so many examples of how this model has been successfully adapted to suit non-traditional (more inclusive) community needs.

In this session, we will explore:

  • Examples of new “cohousing-like” or “adaptive cohousing” models
  • How particular adaptations reflect the communities and individuals they serve
  • Different needs for different communities: LGBTQ+, foster families, neuro-diversity, homeless transitional, veterans and more
  • Innovation in co-housing and how they address real individual and collective community needs
  • How opportunity (land, context, community) influences how the cohousing model is applied
  • Your thoughts, ideas and feelings about these co-housing innovations

This is a one-hour teaser for an upcoming 5-week course, Adapting the Cohousing Model: Pushing the Boundaries of Community Development. This immersive program is meant to help you deepen your understanding of cohousing and give you constructive and practical strategies to get your forming community moving ahead constructively, implementing strategies that adapt the model to your own needs and opportunities.

Meet the Facilitator

Bryan Bowen

A New Mexico desert kid, Bryan Bowen has been a practicing architect since graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1995. He is dedicated to the design of sustainable structures of all scales that serve client needs and that create thriving neighborhoods that are great to live in. He approaches this work with a sense of humility, humor, and professionalism.

Bryan founded Caddis Collaborative in 2002, a multidisciplinary design collaborative that explores ways of living more lightly upon our earth in beautiful, healthy environments. In addition to our skills in architecture and entitlement, Caddis’ expertise in grassroots community engagement is essential for cohousing, mutlifamily housing, new-urbanist neighborhoods, resort related development, and institutional projects.

Bryan served two terms as a member of the City of Boulder Planning Board, sat on the Design Advisory Board, Landmarks Board, and Housing Advisory Board as well as participating in several major initiatives like the Missing Middle, Form Based Code, and Downtown Design Guidelines, the Co-op Ordinance, and advocated for increases in inclusionary housing. He and his family lived in Wild Sage Cohousing for 17 years and Caddis offices in Studio Mews, both in the heart of Holiday Neighborhood in north Boulder.

Loved by Community Builders

Teri’s presence, warmth, poise, experience and clarity. I quickly felt at ease and confident that she knew what she was talking about, and could share the material effectively, while also managing the group format. – Jeffrey B

What a beautiful gift to our intentional community builders and leaders! FIC’s programs provide a way for thinking and concerned people to collaborate for solutions to our multitude of global crises. Thank you FIC! – Terri Garcia

I am constantly impressed by the down-to-earth practicality of the FIC workshops combined with the philosophical questions that are so vital for us to explore. I’m grateful for the excellent planning and delivery of the workshops by skilled and inclusive presenters, who create a space that is both welcoming and invites participants to challenge existing ideas and world views. Well done and thank you FIC. – Claire Ogden
