Recognizing and Reducing Implicit Bias

REGISTER NOW

Join “The Diversity Doctor”, Stacie Walton MD for an overview of the neuroscience of bias and practical ways that you can recognize and reduce your unconscious bias.

Our brains are wired for survival, and we are wired to fear our differences. These processes primarily live in the vast unconscious processes of our brain.

So, it is not surprising that we tend to have biases, prejudices, and stereotypes that are processed in the brain in split seconds. We make snap judgments about other people and groups of people which directly impacts the quality of our thoughts and the nature of our behaviors.

But the fact that some of our biases are unconscious does not mean that we are off the hook. When we are not aware of the power of our unconscious or implicit biases to make these snap judgments, we are at the mercy of beliefs we are not cognizant of and are blind to. This results in behavior and decisions that perpetuate systems and structures of inequality, disenfranchisement, and violence that we’re ultimately responsible for.

By waking up to our implicit biases, we can take ownership of them and consciously decide how we want to be in the world and the communities we want to co-create. In Stacie Watson’s upcoming 90-minute webinar, you’ll learn some steps to take to do just that.

During this session you will learn:

  • Relevant terms related to implicit bias
  • Basic brain structures and processes that influence implicit bias
  • How to recognize and reduce implicit bias

What a beautiful gift to our intentional community builders and leaders! FIC’s programs provide a way for thinking and concerned people to collaborate for solutions to our multitude of global crises. Thank you FIC! – Terri Garcia

I am constantly impressed by the down-to-earth practicality of the FIC workshops combined with the philosophical questions that are so vital for us to explore. I’m grateful for the excellent planning and delivery of the workshops by skilled and inclusive presenters, who create a space that is both welcoming and invites participants to challenge existing ideas and world views. Well done and thank you FIC. – Claire Ogden
