About the Community

What we do

ReJenerate is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit housing co-op currently under development in Madison. The co-op consists of two historic houses that were purchased by RefineJenifer (www.refinejenifer.com) in 2019 with the goal of turning them into an affordable housing co-op. In September 2022, the property was sold to the ReJenerate Housing Cooperative. As of May 2025, construction is expected to be completed this summer. While the culture of the co-op is still forming, house dinners are held regularly, and members are developing house policies and a membership plan. Current residents host movie nights, parties, and a monthly cookout. (www.rejeneratecoop.org)

Our values are focused around environmental sustainability and our goal is to create a permanently affordable diverse intentional community on Madison’s rapidly gentrifying isthmus.

Some features of the co-op:

– A new commercial kitchen and dining room in the basement where meals will be prepared and served. The basements of the two houses are connected together underground with a skylight between them (the houses are only 3 feet apart)

– Eleven rooms and four “suites” — apartment style units with 2-5 bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchenette that will be intentionally inclusive of families

– Two rooms will be ADA accessible. Three rooms will be reserved for young adults experiencing housing insecurity.

– We’re working to be (close to) net zero. As part of the construction there will be extensive energy efficiency upgrades – insulation, air source heat pump HVAC, electrical, and more. The houses have a solar PV system.

– The co-op will have three electric vehicles as part of a carsharing plan. This will help members cut down on personal car ownership and use of street parking. The neighborhood is already very bike, ped, and transit friendly.

Our Vision

ReJenerate’s mission statement, adopted August 2024:

We aim to create a space where we can all live better together than we could alone.

We will do this by coming together to build and maintain a cooperative housing community that is committed to…

– Trusting good faith and the unique perspective of each of its members.
– Keeping a home that is safe, comfortable, compassionate, accessible and welcoming to people of all backgrounds.
– Governing together in an egalitarian, participatory manner, with open and transparent communication grounded in mutual respect.
– Promoting cooperative spirit, mutual aid, and the idea that there is more when we share.
– Sustaining the longevity of our community through sound environmental, economic, and social practices.
– Leaving this place better than we found it, so that those who come after us may enjoy the fruits of our labor.
