Roberts Creek Cohousing is the first purposely built, rural cohousing community in Canada. After five and one half years of planning and approximately five hundred meetings, we began construction in late 2003. All 31 homes were occupied by December 2004.
Our community is home to a rich diversity of adults and children from Canada and elsewhere (USA, U.K., with children from Guatemala and Kazakhstan). Currently we have approx. 50 adults ranging in age from 18 – 83 and 14 children.
Our site is 20 acres, with the buildings occupying 9 acres. The houses are mostly single-family homes with some duplexes. We share a small community garden, woodworking shop, small ceramic studio and exercise gym.
We have a large common house that is central to the physical and emotional heart of our community. Since the common house was finished in June 2005, we have been sharing regular community dinners together (twice a week so far). Community meals on hold since the March 2020 Covid pandemic.
Now that the hardware is in place we are beginning to focus more on the work of creating honest and authentic connection. It’s not always easy, however most members are committed to learning. Our most recent learning was a session with Laird Schaub (Dec 2020).
Our vegetable gardens have grown and now include two greenhouses. Since the pandemic the garden team has grown and it is providing a way for people to safely gather. In 2020 and 2021 meetings are held via zoom.
Our regular work parties provide a great opportunity to be together outside during the pandemic. And as we have a large site there is always lots of work to do.
Our other main focus is to generally have a good time.
