About the Community

What we do

With over 50 years of history, we focus on personal, relational and organizational learning by utilizing experiential education, cultural programs, and work and play gatherings. We have historically been a non-residential community, with member involvement of people living primarily in the Pacific Northwest. We are now expanding the capacity of our residential rural property, Sahale Learning Center. We are seeking new members, both nonresidential members and those who are interested in living at Sahale. Sahale is a gathering place for members and friends who live elsewhere and enjoy participating in relational and community-building activities, as well as care for the facilities and land. About 15 – 20 people participate regularly by Zoom in organizational meetings covering all aspects of our community and Sahale. We also invite folks to join cultural and relationship-building and learning opportunities via Zoom. Various in-person weekend gatherings at Sahale also occur as part of these programs. An annual week-long gathering is held at Sahale each summer. See our website for more information. Living at Sahale : One of our goals is to create an ecovillage at Sahale, fostering a strong residential community using practices such as permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Goodenough Community has a stepped process for interested and qualified folks to apply for residency at Sahale Learning Center. After experiencing a decrease in numbers in the last few years due to aging and restructuring, and by focusing on our shared future, the way is now open to welcome new people who enjoy the rustic beauty at Sahale, have an experience of living in community, and align with the mission and vision of our community. Long-term residents in Sahale must also choose to become members of the Goodenough Community. We are currently seeking people who are comfortable with transition and have experience merging new with old. In the coming years, major change is inevitable everywhere and our hope for Sahale and the Goodenough Community is to bring our own wisdom forward while learning from new creative ideas. People who move to Sahale now will be the future, bringing shared wisdom and resilience. Sahale has also developed a retreat center business, which is a major income source for the community. While the shape of this business may change, Sahale will continue to host outside groups and individuals in some capacity, as well as being a home for Goodenough Community events. Currently there are four people living at Sahale, but our goal is to grow the residential community, possibly to as many as several dozen people. In order to achieve this, we are assessing how to create new housing and infrastructure (in some cases through repurposing existing structures) that reflects ecological and community living principles and that supports growth in our numbers.
